The Operating Room Staff Nurse functions primarily as a professional operating room
nurse in the surgery center and assists as needed in other areas (pre-op and recovery)
to assure the highest level of perioperative care for each patient. The position is under
the supervision of the Director of Nursing/Administrator and involves good
communication skills with all areas of the center and a thorough knowledge of
procedures, equipment, and medications used in the OR.
Position Scope:
The position’s responsibilities encompass several areas and include providing a
standard of excellence in the care of the patient before, during, and after surgical
intervention, respecting the rights of the patient as an individual, confidentiality of patient
information, and providing nursing care which is in keeping with the physician’s plan of
care.
Position Functions:
1. Patient Care – Maintains quality care on the Operating Room. Possesses
knowledge of perioperative nursing and is able to apply it to the ambulatory
surgery setting.
2. Communication – Interacts favorably with the patient, the patient’s family,
physicians, and co-workers in a professional manner.
3. Problem Solving – Anticipates possible critical events and has prior provisions
ready to deal with such events. Deals with personnel problems through proper
channels.
4. Teaching – Provides patient teaching through pre-operative visits and whenever
possible during the operative stay. Assists with the orientation of new personnel.
5. Inventory Control – Evaluates and upgrades equipment and supplies in order to
provide safety and the best possible patient care. Observes proper ordering and
storing of supplies.
6. Infection Control – Ensures that infection control procedures are followed.
7. Patient Safety – Ensures patient safety throughout procedures.
8. Patient Advocate – Functions as patient advocate during facility stay.
Education and Experience:
Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current Virginia license as Registered Nurse (RN) and have had at least two (2) years experience in an operating room. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of general nursing and the principles and practices of OR nursing.
